How we calculate your revenue opportunity
This calculator provides hypothetical turnover comparisons, not predictions of what a food hygiene rating will earn. Actual results depend on trading conditions, customers, costs and many other factors.
1. Rating-based comparison (graph and receipt)
Current illustrative turnover = weekly turnover × opportunity window. Selected illustrative turnover = current illustrative turnover × (1 + direction × chosen uplift rate / 100), where direction is +1 for an improved selected rating, −1 for a lower selected rating, or 0 when ratings match. These uplift assumptions are not measured FSA effects.
2. Optional uplift sensitivity (5%, 10%, 15%)
For exploration only: weekly turnover × selected illustrative uplift percentage × 8 measurement weeks. This selected uplift assumption updates the graph and receipt. It is not a percentage per additional star.
3. Correction period and timing
Your selected correction period (8 weeks) describes an estimated improvement process, not when an inspection or new official rating is guaranteed. The revenue illustrations cover a separate measurement window of 8 weeks, assumed to begin only after the improvement and rating scenario are achieved.
4. What the evidence supports
The Food Standards Agency's 2024 business survey reports that 67% of surveyed businesses in England displaying their rating said it brought them more customers, and 84% agreed that higher ratings offer a competitive advantage. This is reported perception, not a measured percentage uplift in turnover. NFU Mutual consumer research reported greater stated willingness to spend at five-star than three-star premises; stated intentions do not establish actual turnover gains.
